CBCANSW Hunter Region

YOUNG WRITERS STORY COMPETITION

For writers aged 10 to 12 years of age

 

Competition opens September 7, 2026

Competition closes September 21, 2026

 

  • Entry fee: free for CBCA members, $30 per school for non-members

  • Only TWO entries from each participating school can be submitted.

  • Prizes:​​ 
    Winner: $50 book voucher plus an A4 sized illustration about the            story created by a local picture book illustrator & a certificate
    Two Runners Up: a $25 book voucher each & a certificate

  • Winners to be contacted on October 13th, 2025

  • Prize giving to be coordinated between the schools and CBCANSW Hunter representatives.

  • Winners will be promoted on CBCANSW Hunter social media. Posts will only include these identifiers - title of the winning entries, first name of students, name of the school.

  • Winning entries will be included in the CBCANSW Hunter November newsletter. If you wish to subscribe to our newsletter, please send an email to cbcanewcastle@gmail.com.

ENTRY FORMATTING

  1. Word count: 500 words (excluding title)

  2. The stories must feature a musical element to reflect this year's Book Week theme of A Symphony of Stories. 

  3. All contest entries must be emailed as a Word doc using Times New Roman font, 12-point type, double-spaced.

  4. The title, writer’s name and school’s name should appear in the header of each entry.

  5. Entries must be easy to read and use correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.

  6. All entries must be original works and written in English.

  7. All rights to the story remain the property of the author.

  8. As we value the original and creative ideas of young writers, all stories must be the student’s own original work.

  9. Students or supervising teachers/librarians may not use AI tools to help plan, write, rewrite, or edit any part of the submitted story. This includes generating ideas, designing characters, writing sentences, or receiving corrections from AI.

  10. Any writing suspected of being created by AI, is at risk of disqualification.

Email BOTH stories as two separate word doc attachments with theONE ENTRY email to: cbcanewcastle@gmail.com.

Ensure the words HUNTER YOUNG WRITERS COMPETITION 2026 appear in the subject line.

You must include the school’s address, phone number and name of a teacher/contact person in the body of the email.
